KLFW 2015: Must-haves from the runway

There are fashion moments that make you sit up and say: ‘How beautiful!’ And then there are fashion moments that make you sit up and say: ‘I WANT THAT NOW.’ The best is when those two moments coincide, and over the course of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2015, they did. Many times. We walked away from the shows with renewed respect for many of our Malaysian designers, and a crippling wishlist.

Quhji white asymmetrical tunic

Stephanie: If you haven’t already noticed, white is my favourite colour of the season. Even though Quhji is a menswear line, I couldn’t help but want every single piece from his collection. The tunic’s high collar is reminiscent of traditional Chinese menswear but the dramatic asymmetrical hemline gives it a modern edge. I love that it has a high-low hem and covers the butt. This way I won’t have to worry about VPL or whether leftover pizza at midnight was a bad idea.

Emma: When Mel Ahyar‘s models marched out in nomadic, print-heavy ensembles, I wasn’t expecting much that I’d add to my own wardrobe. But when I started breaking down the looks, some great pieces jumped out – my favourite was a tailored sleeveless coat in heathery grey linen, fastened at the front with heavily beaded cord and bright yellow tassels. Perfect thrown over a t-shirt and jeans for the weekend, or on top of a crisp white shirt dress for work.

Stephanie: I love halter necklines, fullstop. Having been born with broad man shoulders, I’ve learned that this neckline works best for my body type so the minute this model walked out, I was like “MUST.HAVE.IN.LIFE.” Also, I love the slinky silhouette and the textured panel in the middle, giving the dress a little dimension. Maatin Shakir‘s showroom is just across the street from TiC HQ so I’m gonna make sure I get first dibs on this piece come production.

Eclipse pyjama jumpsuit

Emma: So hard to narrow it down to just one piece from the Eclipse collection, but I think the pyjama jumpsuits won for me (there’s also a shorts version). I love the cropped, culotte-like leg and the fact that it would work equally well with beaten up white sneakers and pointy heels.

Eclipse fringed bucket bag. And lace up gladiator sandals

Emma: Okay, couldn’t stick to just one piece! Sonny San scored some major points with his accessories this season – he sent out variations on a tiny, adorable bucket bag, some with pastoral floral appliques, others (pictured) bedecked in shimmering fringe. And the shoes – it was great seeing so many flats on the runway this year, and Eclipse’s were among the best. The TiC team lost their collective heart to these simple sandals, with a beaded strap and lace up details.

Kathryn: You know a collection is going to be amazing when you get goosebumps as soon as the first model walks out. Man Chien never ceases to disappoint. I’ve always wanted an artistic full circle skirt but never really found one that suited my personality and style up until I saw this one. Now, I wonder if Man Chien gives media discounts…

Emma: White dresses are my jam, especially when they’re embellished with chunky slabs of shininess like this Ezzati Amira beauty is. I feel like this dress would slot so well into so many people’s lives – it’s the perfect balance between relaxed and dressy, and the embellishment manages to be edgy, not princessy.

Kathryn: Besides the flawless workmanship on these garments by Hatta Dolmat, I just love beetles. You may find me a bit strange, but considering the fact that they do influence some of the most intricate detailing in fashion – from rings to brooches, earrings to headpieces, prints to colour palettes, you can’t deny that these admirable creatures bring beauty to the industry one step at a time.

Sean & Sheila gold embroidered coat

Stephanie: You have no idea how hard it is for me to pick my favourite look from Sean & Sheila‘s show, but gun to my head, I’ll have to go with the most extravagant piece of all: the gold embroidered coat. I love that the gold is pale and little muted, steering it away from being borderline gaudy. Also, the kois embroidered all over are too cute to handle. Given our tropical weather, wearing this around would be a little ridiculous but since when was fashion ever really sensible?

Tsyahmi trousers

Emma: Everyone’s talking about THE Tsyahmi trousers – they’re this year’s answer to the high-low skirt, and so much more chic. They came in two candy-flecked colours, and looked innocuous until the models started moving, and then you saw the way the fabric billowed and flowed like pretty sails.

Kathryn: I normally wake up surrounded by dogs at home. So, by presenting cute puppy prints you’ve naturally made my favourites list. Australian brand Saveus had me at woof with the childish puppy illustrations and their cute pastel shadows on this oversized bomber jacket.
